#`19 A bit of impostor syndrome?
Hello Everyone,
I hope you’re having a great week ahead?
I was talking with my friend recently, who is looking to make a career change. But, unfortunately, he got stressed out about the idea of taking an exciting role that was entirely out of his comfort zone.
And he immediately realized that his impostor syndrome is very much present in his life right now.
What made it also challenging for him was realizing the feeling and not being able to control his thoughts and do something about it at that moment.
When we think of the impostor syndrome, most of the time, we face the following:
feeling like a fraud
not being able to internalize our achievements
fear of being "found out."
thinking that everyone else is better than you
Research shows that it's also linked to perfectionism, where a person will always push themself to do more since they feel they are not "good enough."
I don't believe there is a quick fix in dealing with impostor syndrome - coaching itself is not an overnight fix to your problems. But I do think there are actions you can take to manage your response to it.
Take a deep breath and remember your peak moments in your career;
Collect feedback from others on your work - think of all the moments you received positive feedback from others;
Reflect on your thinking patterns - what assumptions are you making of yourself? What core beliefs are fueling those assumptions and behaviors? What new beliefs need to be created for you to be successful?
Again, reflect on what triggers your impostor syndrome. When exactly is it coming into your life? What are you missing out on when you let the impostor drive you? What is the ideal way for you to handle that moment?
These are just some ideas; obviously, there's more to unpack during the coaching session about the impostor syndrome, and there are way more ways to try and handle it.
I'll leave you with a question to ponder on until next time:
Who is leading your life right now, You or your impostor syndrome?
As usual, I hope this serves you.
Flo
PS: In less than a month, I'll be starting my coaching cert program, and I can't wait! I can take 2-3 more clients on, so if you're interested or know someone who is, let's chat. I've worked with people looking to find joy in their work, be bold and confident, new managers stepping into a new challenge, and a bit of relationship coaching. I see myself as a generalist coach for now, so I am open to anything you throw at me 🙂
